Grace Grit and Gadgets!

First meeting face to face of the new season.
12/09/2025
Members enjoyed the first face to face meeting after the summer break, and Suzanne Ladd got to show her own photos in person given that last week her technology let her down. Whilst welcoming back existing members, we were pleased that Toby followed up last week’s Zoom with an in-person attendance to familiarise himself with the personalities and the venue. We hope he will join us as a member, and our thoughts are with Janice, whom we continue to miss a great deal.

I then led the remainder of the evening. First with an explanation or the range of gadgets I have bought or cobbled together over the years as aids and props to my photography endeavours, then after the usual cake and refreshments supplied by Louise, with a presentation on Photographing Birds of Prey under the title “Grace and Grit”.

Gadgets on show ranged from several straps I have tried to lessen the strain on my neck and improve my mobility and dexterity when juggling two cameras, to hoods and adapters that lessen the glare on glass or provide support for light diffusers or concentrators for colour when light painting. I showed and explained my use of wet weather gear – including the official type and the makeshift use of a shower cap. There were also portable mini tripods and clamps made from knitting needles, pegs and paperclips to make plants do as I want them to. Hopefully there was something for everyone!

“Grace and Grit” was a Powerpoint presentation that I put together largely following a very enjoyable trip to Pitcombe Rock Falconry near Bruton, and subsequent and increasing involvement with “Owl Enlightment” at Paddington Farm, Glastonbury- another destination that comes highly recommended. I hope I communicated how useful it can be to take an unfamiliar context in which to practise photography skills we all employ elsewhere.

Next week members are set to enjoy Roy Carr’s presentation “Outdoor Life”.
