Keith Spicer judges the last print competition of our season.
Quite a varied selection from ambitious memberrs!

Our judge for the last competition of our season, Keith Spicer is very familiar with the Society and its members, and was very complimentary about the standard of the prints in both Colour and Mono sections. He declared it a difficult task to choose between them, but that is not to say he did not have plenty of valued advice to give on our work, and all members who entered benefitted from his considerable knowledge and expertise on subject matter, composition and technical details.
The competitions drew a wide range of entries ranging from traditional wildlife, travel and portraiture images to the more abstract and emotive themes that challenge the senses and push the boundaries.
In the Mono section both Jenny Short and Suzanne Ladd were Commended respectively for the minimalist “Divided by the Light” and “Seedhead”, whilst Tony Nineham and David Bathard were awarded Highly Commended for “Skeleton of a Tree” and “The Shoemaker’s Mother”. Bill Collett took 3rd Place with “Caterini”, and the dual between Jenny Short’s portrait “Timeless Wisdom” and Jill Toman’s “Lone Tree , Llyn Padnam” was ultimately won by Jill Toman.
In the Colour Competition Jenny Short and Jill Toman were both Commended for ”Glass Ensemble” and “BlackChurch Rock”, together with David Bathard for ”Fast Food Outlet”.Pip Rabbitts was Highly Commended for “Four Spotted Chaser” and David Bathard was again in the frame with a Highly Commended image “Home from the Washing”. Finding it difficult to choose between the two very different images “Akha Girl” (Jill Toman) and “Solitude” (Pamela Bruce- Lockhart), Keith awarded them joint 1st place, leaving David Bathard’s “Tawny Owl” in 2nd place overall in the section.
Keith was warmly thanked (and handsomely rewarded with cake) for all his hard work and agonising decisions, and we look forward to welcoming him back to our club next year. Next week Tony and Louise will give a joint presentation and the Committee meets to discuss plans for Summer Outings. All images from this week’s last competition will shortly be in a Gallery on our website so why not take a look?
