March Open Print Competition judged.

Wildlife dominates!
Popular judge, Hilary Britland, was warmly welcomed when she returned to Norton Radstock on Thursday to judge our March Open Print Competition. Hilary’s reputation as a photographers’ sympathetic, critical friend is well deserved, and she once again demonstrated considerable skill in providing us with a pacey, focused feedback session, full of detail and well considered judgements that will take us forward in the quest to improve.
Hilary’s knowledge and understanding of the artistic elements that make an image memorable was well communicated in a highly appreciative dialogue that described tones and colour as well as composition and technical skill, and served to encourage personal improvement and engender hope in those who submitted their work but won no accolades. Hilary had spent considerable time in crafting her carefully worded responses to a good entry in both colour and black and white classes, and her final judgments were made with clarity and enthusiasm.

Diana Walker had a particularly successful evening taking first and third place respectively in the Colour section with her “Cheetah” and “Yellow Billed Kite with Clover”. Jenny Short took second place with “Curves and Colour” with Janice Cuer and Jill Toman Highly Commended and Ivy Goatcher Commended.

In the Black and White section Suzanne Ladd was back on winning form with “HMS Cavalier, Chatham” with Diana Walker achieving a second place with Shellduck duckling that provided the “aaah” moment of the evening. Jill Toman took third place with “Barra, Outer Hebrides” and was Highly Commended and Commended with two further wildlife images, whilst Graham Nicholls’ portrayal of a rugby highlight, entitled “Lifting them Up”, was also Highly Commended.

Next week the Audio Visual Group will be presenting their most recent efforts to what we hope will be a packed house including some new members and a further reminder that the AGM , previously postponed because of the weather, will now take place on March 29th. Entries for the remaining monthly Competition on the current programme should be submitted digitally by the 5th April, an evening when Diana Walker will be leading the evening with shots taken in the past year.
